Volunteering

Volunteers remove graffiti

There are many ways to get involved in the Lea River Park project:

Clean Up Team
We run regular events to clean up local grot spots and improve the waterways for people and wildlife.  No previous experience is needed and all equipment is provided.  These events usually happen at weekends.  See our Calendar of events to find the next clean up, or visit the Thames21 website for events across London.

Stickleback Support
Volunteers are needed to help support our Fish in the Classroom project, which runs in 15 schools in Newham and Tower Hamlets.  You could help to care for the stickleback and educate teachers, pupils and parents about them and their habitat.  Volunteering would be during school hours in April, May and June and all Stickleback Support volunteers would be asked to complete a Criminal Records Bureau check. See our Fish in the Classroom page for more details.

Event Team
We attend local events such as open days and resident's days to promote the Lea River Park and the work of Thames21.  We chat to people about the project and run a speed litter picking competition.  Could you help us to reach more people?  These events happen at weekends.

Community Board Member
Our Community Board are advocates for the Lea River Park, guiding and supporting all aspects of its development using their skills and experience as local people.  The Community Board meet on Wednesday evenings, usually one or two meetings a month.  See our Community Board page to meet the members.

Walk Leader
We lead regular walks throughout the Lea River Park area, and it's always helpful to have two or three trained leaders on each walk.  You don't need any previous experience, just friendliness and enthusiasm for walking!  All training will be provided through the Walk Tower Hamlets scheme.  From 12th March 2010 walks will take place on Friday mornings from 10.30am - 11.30am starting from the Aberfeldy Neighbourhood Centre, Aberfeldy St, E14 0NU.

Wildlife Surveyor
Do you enjoy watching wildlife?  You could help us.  We want to build a picture of which areas of the Lea River Park are most important for the variety of plants and animals which live there.  We provide the forms for you to record your sightings and information.  Wildlife surveyors could volunteer anytime during daylight hours.

All our volunteer positions are fully supported by the Community Engagement Manager, and training is provided where appropriate.  We also pay travel expenses.  If you are interested in any of the volunteer positions, or would like more information please email aimee.felus@thames21.org.uk or call 0207 0936 382.
